James Legrand Powers

Born 1871. Bureau of the Census engineer who in about 1910 devised mechanical sensing of card perforations as an improvement of Hollerith's electrical sensing method, and who later founded the Powers Accounting Machine Company, which became part of Remington-Rand, then Univac, Sperry-Rand, and eventually UNISYS.
